MASTER CLASS: Lights, Camera, Novel! Script-Writing Secrets for Novelists
by Hillary DePiano
June 15-26, 2026
(limited to 25 people)
Prerequisite: Must have a story idea you are interested in developing.
Stories don’t only come from novels. We see them at the movies, on our TV screens, live on stage or in our favorite video games and comics. As novelists in the modern world, our competition for readers’ attention often isn’t other books, but all the other storytelling mediums available. But rather than lamenting the shift towards more visual and cinematic narratives, novelists can employ those same script writing techniques that screenwriters and playwrights use to write more compelling (and selling!) stories:
- Understanding the basics of script writing and storytelling economy
- Saving the cat and other ways to structure a story
- Mastering the cycle of action and reaction
- Thinking like a casting director as you develop your characters
- Using the negative space and doing more with less
- Solving plot issues by re-imagining prose to script and back
